The VP44B is typical of the first generation of low-cost Super VGA cards. Built around the Cirrus Logic CL-GD5320, it sacrificed expansion beyond 256 KB in favour of a highly integrated, inexpensive design. Performance was respectable rather than exceptional, but its broad compatibility and ability to operate in either 8-bit or 16-bit ISA systems made it a practical upgrade for a wide range of PCs. It captures the moment when VGA became an affordable standard rather than a premium feature.
